LOOKING FOR: Pulp-inspired adventure stories in the vein of H. Rider Haggard, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Arthur O. Friel, Harold Lamb, Robert E. Howard, Theodore Roscoe, H. Bedford Jones, Louis L’Amour, and others.

WORD COUNT: 5,000 – 6,500 words. We are not accepting flash fiction at this time. Will consider serial fiction of a longer word count, please reach out to discuss.

GUIDELINES:

  1. Not interested in treading tired stereotypes and tropes of yesteryear but clear knowledge of genre conventions is a plus.
  2. Not interested in detailed depictions of violence, gore, or sex consensual or otherwise.
  3. Romance is optional but NOT discouraged.
  4. Supernatural or Weird elements are not required. A lack thereof is preferred unless otherwise stated.
  5. Preferance for vintage, real-world settings.
  6. Emphasis on ADVENTURE! We want to see new things, make discoveries, and get into trouble.
  7. Will consider Westerns and Historicals (eg. “Hawks of the Outremer”, Khlit the Cossack, “Tros of Samothrace”).
  8. Strong openings a plus. Grab in the first paragraph if you can.
  9. NO AI. CLIFFHANGER! Magazine respects authors and artists and believes their work is valubale. AI submissions will result in a permanent black list.
